According to Michael Essien, Manchester United could still secure a late deal to sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton this summer.
The Belgian forward has been heavily linked with a return to Stamford Bridge in recent weeks and Chelsea appear keen to bring the 24-year-old back to the west London side.
Despite all of the speculations, however, Chelsea are yet to announce any official signings this summer as Antonio Conte prepares for his second season in charge.
When asked if Lukaku and Mourinho could work together again at Manchester United, Essien told the Manchester Evening News: “Yes, why not?
“If Jose wants him and he wants to play for Jose then yes they can work together.
“They both have to want to work with each other for that to happen and if the desire is there then, yes, they can work together.”
Manchester United have been linked with a host of players this summer but have thus far only confirmed the capture of defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica.
Mourinho was the manager who deemed Lukaku to be surplus to requirements at Chelsea back in the summer of 2014, when he approved the sale of the striker to Everton.
